Essa backed away, panic on her face. Three agents grabbed her and dragged her off.

“We’re agents,” one of them replied. She was middle age, with electric orange eyes. “Here to restore the proper timeline.”

"And who are you to decide which timeline is the proper one?" Wynn retorted. "If this timeline was allowed to happen, surely it is the correct one."

Lerac lunged forward with his dagger, making for Essa.

TAAron glanced around, panicked. "What should we do?"

Quote

Yes.

Another agent stepped forward, one with gold hair and blue highlights. He pulled out a sword and dueled casually.

“It’s over,” Mitis replied as an agent helped her to her feet. “There’s nothing we can do now.”

Just now, Ranryu said:

“We have policies for this sort of event,” the lead agent replied. “You have no reason to resist.”

Bracing himself against a bookshelf, TAAron shot a few coins at the agent dueling Lerac, who was still fighting furiously.

Unfortunately, everything was going exactly as it had been foreseen. Wynn sighed.

"I acknowledge that you will be the victor of this fight, but it's against my principles to simply let you do something that will most likely destroy my friend." She launched a volley of Shadow at the agents, knowing what the outcome would be.

The agent stepped aside and back into the group. Essa was gone, the door through which she’d vanished locked. Mitis was gone too, and Jove.

The lead one flung a thing at the shadows, which vanished in a brilliant flash of light. “Your principles are good. I had to jump through a lot of hoops to obtain items powerful enough to overcome you.”

So the fight's pretty much over?

Lerac growled furiously. "Why? Why are you intent on doing this?"

She sighed and sent another round. "Unfortunate that we had to fight at all. I understand, you're just doing your job. But I've come to learn that standing up for one's friends is a 'human' thing to do. And seeing as how my friends are human, I have no other choice."

Yes.

“We know things you don’t,” the head agent replied.

She threw another thing and dispersed the shadow, walking closer. “I understand that, Wynn. Not a problem. I know how this goes—memorized my lines ahead of time. The same ones I’m saying now, in fact. We all did.”

She gave up, knowing that her symbol of friendship only meant so much. "We both know what's coming. If you had any sense, you'd kill me here."

The agent tilted her head and smiled. “That’s against principle, dear. We help here and there—we don’t rewrite the story. Enjoy it while it lasts, when it comes.”

Agents walked confidently up to Wynn to escort her out of the room.

Without warning, TAAron ran at the head agent, holding the knife he had given Haly earlier. As he ran, he burned electrum, allowing him to see visions of his own future a few seconds ahead.

This would disrupt the agent's predictions, as he can react to his perceived future and change it.

Wynn managed not to laugh at being called dear. Even if she wasn't older than these strange agents (which she most likely was), she wasn't that much younger than them.

Wouldn't this be a prime moment for Malum to attack. :P

“We have Haly,” the agent informed him, waving a hand to where another did, indeed, have a knife to her throat. “Surrender or she dies.”

Nobody’s going to do much to him.

Wynn used the distraction as an opportunity to do something. Not much... just a little Shadow on Haly, as she was at the moment. The agents wouldn't notice, or at least wouldn't indicate that they noticed. After all, this didn't conflict with their purpose.

I don't think that that would work very well because it takes a while for Malum to be able to travel to a new dimension.

TAAron froze for just a moment. Then, he Pulled, wrenching the knife out of the agent's grasp and catching it in midair. He once again made for the lead agent, now brandishing two knives.

It's probably for the best, but it would've been amusing.

What would this do?

The lead agent waved her hand. The agent with Haly took another knife from inside his jacket and stabbed her in the stomach.

“Stop, or it’ll be worse,” the agent warned.

It doesn't matter unless they do something that would kill her before they change the timeline back.

Wynn grunted disapprovingly. "Unnecessary violence. Haven't you ever studied psychology? Rewards work better than punishments."

By the way, the agent's predictions of the future are now completely off, because TAAron is doing something he would not otherwise have done.

Lerac quickly knocked that agent aside and pulled out the knife, healing Haly as quickly as he could.

TAAron reached the head agent and knocked her to the floor, holding the knives over her, a disturbing madness in his eyes.

An arrow hit TAAron in the back.

Did you see the note that her predictions of the future would no longer be correct? She probably would not have been aware that he would attack her.

TAAron, unhinged, flared pewter to make the pain subside, then plunged both knives into the lead agent's chest.

They can win from here, but yeah.
