You know, if he said that Tayen had bargained the truth for his freedom (a lie), it would break her heart…

That contradicts what the interrogator already said, and his intention isn't to hurt her, anyway.

"Due to the limited damage his crime actually caused, he could still be let off given the confession, though such unpunished instances can harshen the punishments for other crimes, and he would be kept on watch."

“Then he is less foolish than I believed. Your time is kinder to criminals than mine was.”

Gotta go, goodnight!

What if she got sentenced to a relatively long imprisonment, but unbeknownst to her people in her wing live on contracted time and are released within only a few days relative to the outside?

... That could be fun. And traumatic for her, since she won't see Tayen the whole time.

Helda had long since given up hope of being rescued. She’d once believed that Tayen would come, that he would save her, but he’d left her again. She couldn’t even hate him, couldn’t shed tears, those were long past. She waited, she’d been waiting for a long time, but she’d waited before. This was harder than normal, but it was only a year. Only a year…without him. She was over it. She had to be. She’d find another meaning to her life after she was released.
