As she wandered about the newly reunited, breathing in the new life waiting for her with Mark, she paused.

There was something lingering in the back of her mind that had to be dealt with.

No regrets.

She filled herself with self-assuredness and assumed her regular demeanor to go approach the traitor.

Astra approached quietly, savoring the moment's tense silence, before speaking.

"Corin?"

@Edema Rue

Corin stiffened. Ariya…

I can’t help you here.

”Astra.”

"It's been a while since the casino, hasn't it?" Her face shaped into a tight smile, eyes stone.

Corin felt a pang in his chest. “Look, I—it wasn’t—they were going to kill my family if I didn’t do it.” Even to him, the excuse sounded weak.

Astra raised an eyebrow.

"So that's where your priorities stand?"

She took a step forward.

"I didn't realize you cared so much about them," she scoffed.

Corin’s gaze darkened. “What about Mark? Fell in love, did you?”

"Someone's hurt," Astra clenched her fist behind her back, smiling coldly into Corin's eyes.

Corin let out a quiet breath. “So we’re both human after all. Did you need something, Astra?”

"It depends."

She glanced about.

"Where are you going now?" She said when she turned back to him, voice softening.

“I’m…I’m still figuring that out.” He let out a quiet breath. “My casino is calling. But this whole world is changing. Just look at what we’ve done. I can’t sit around and deal cards while everything happens without me.” Corin shrugged. It was easier to be honest with a human. Ariya was almost too wise; sometimes, you needed the emotion only a human could have.

“I’ll find people to protect, and I’ll build a knew home for myself. But what about you? Free from all chains except the ones you’ve placed on yourself…what will you become now?”

"Play it risky and you might get an unlucky hand," Astra smiled, "It's always safer being the dealer."

Astra dragged loose strands of hair away from her eyes.

"I never escaped any chains," she said breathily, "Though I believed I did. I called the binds others imposed on me my own to live my self-restricting fantasy, I suppose."

She held eye contact with Corin.

"There is more power in identifying your limits and being caught in them than being ignorant of chains but free."

“It isn’t about being safe.” It was about giving others a place to come home to. It was about being constant.

“And I wasn’t talking about anything that happened before. You escaped this arena.” Corin cocked his head. “Of course…I can’t say that I agree. Any chains will hold you down, whether you know of them or not.” He breathed in, a tiny trickle of stormlight filling him. He lashed himself about a foot into the air. “I’m going to fly, Astra.” For as long as I can. Until I can find somewhere to land. Until I can find someone to bring me down…someone like you, maybe. If someone like you will care for someone like me.

“Are you?”

Astra gave him a resigned smile.

"I have seen the worlds in many shades," it was true, what she said. "I wish to see the canvas, the colors. I wish to wield the paintbrush."

She shrugged, contentedly, "But my ship has sailed, Corin."

"I've landed."

She turned over her shoulder to make out the outline of Mark in the distance.

😭😭😭

Corin swallowed. Nodded. Forced a smile, and tried to feel it.

It wasn’t that being alone was a new feeling. And it wasn’t that he’d particularly expected it to change. It’s just that…he’d hoped. Street kids weren’t supposed to hope. They weren’t supposed to form families. And they certainly weren’t supposed to fall in love.

But Ariya had insisted otherwise. She’d promised him that the way things were weren’t the way things needed to be. The streets should have proven otherwise. His time in the Capitol should have proved otherwise. Everything that had happened to him should have proven otherwise! He wasn’t a person who was born to love.

The crew leader is never really a part of the crew.

The barkeeper never really fits with the patrons.

The Windrunner can never really be accepted by those he protects.

Corin knew more than anyone the unique sort of isolation his life had forced on him.

Why teach me hope, Ariya, if it never amounts to anything?

Would you rather believe you’ll always be alone? Hope gives a loveless life purpose.

She was right, of course. Endlessly wise, his spren. And stubbornly unaware of what it was to feel, to hurt. To need more than cold advice, even if it was delivered with feeling.

Corin smiled again, gritting his teeth as if the motion would hold his heart together. “I hope it brings you bliss, then. I hope it’s everything you’ve wanted. If you ever need a game of dice, an old face…” he trailed off. She wouldn’t. She’d be better off without any reminder of him. “The other tributes will be with you the whole way.”

I’ll find a home someday, Ariya. Today was never going to be that day.

Astra reached out her hand to him.

"This could've ended better."

She tilted her head, almost playfully.

"But it could've ended much worse."

Her smile pained her face. This was what she wanted, wasn't it?

Was her love for Mark stronger than her love for freedom?

She was grounded, and now, firmly on land. She was filled with what many wish to achieve.

But could a Willshaper ever sacrifice flight?

"I'll find you one of these days, Corin."

Corin smiled faintly. He didn’t believe her. But he hoped. He chose to hope.

”It certainly could have,” Corin said, smirking gently. He took her hand, and kissed to top as if he were a gentleman. Then he stepped back, giving her a final nod and preparing to take flight.

Astra lowered her head in a tilted bow, looking up at him in bittersweet happiness.

They had found what they wanted from this life, and it wouldn't be a life they shared.

But they were alive.

"Farewell then, Dealer of His Own Hand."

She turned to leave, but flashed a grin behind her shoulder for a moment longer, "I'll see you at the casinos."

She pulled on her cardigan and returned into the crowds.
