Robert looked up from a notebook upon hearing his footsteps.

"There's a guy here, says he needs to talk to you."

Niamh looked- wait, was that the awkward, cloaked man from the night before? Niamh laughed briefly.

She looked back to the other woman. "Why are you invested in helping Jolane? If anything is happening at all." Niamh certainly had her suspicions, but no solid proof of anything.

I love her

wise and collected but also ready to throw hands at any given moment.

Ma'tani fell silent for a moment.

"Got to pay the Spirits back somehow, right?" She said softly. "They gave me him. Maybe they gave Jolane me."

She smiled and shook her head. "Nevermind. That's none of your concern. I'm just someone who likes getting in other people's business, and helping people who never asked for my help. I'm endearing like that."

Niamh was slightly confused about the first part, but nodded. "If you do find something, or you need help, come tell me, yeah?

"I'd certainly like to help put a stop to it."

Robert sighed. "In his fourties, looks worn down?"

"Yeah, a kindred spirit?" July asked lightheartedly.

Ma'tani nodded.

"...On an unrelated note...you're a musician. Have you ever seen one of these?" She gingerly pulled the Shenai flute out of her robes and showed it to Niamh.

Robert shook his head. "Send him in."

"M'kay!" He left the office, and returned to the guy. "You can go in now."

Niamh looked at the instrument. "Possibly. Why?"

What does the flute look like; is there anything special-looking about it?

The man went in, taking a deep breath first.

"If you'd close the door behind you," Robert asked.

The man did.

July walked away while the door was open, but went back while the door was closed.

He casually leaned against it, totally not eavesdropping.

"You should really stop coming here. You're only making it worse for the both of you."

There was a pause.

"I have to try... and even if I fail, I still get to see her."

Robert sighed and put a hand on his forehead. "If you were able to beat me, you would have by now."

"I have to try," the man repeated.

"It was only going to be twenty years at the start. You know that."

"... yes."

"Your doing this has gotten it to be over five hundred."

"Which makes me that much more desperate."

Once again, Robert sighed. He seemed to do that a lot with this man. "Your dedication is honorable. Really. But if you hadn't done this, she'd only be here for another two years."

"Please, just let her..."

"If I could, I would. But you owe me a debt you can't pay me any other way, and every time you come here it gets larger. It has to be either you or her, and we both know it can't be you. Your wife has to stay at home, and I can't take your wife from you."

"Please-"

"No."

A longer silence. The next thing the man said was shaky and quiet.

"But she's my daughter."

"I'm well aware. But you could pay no other way."

"Then let me-"

"No. We're not doing that again. You'll lose and make it worse for the both of you."

"Please-"

"Go home." Pause. "Go home."

The man got out of his chair and began walking towards the door.

...It's a good thing Ma'tani didn't hear that or Robert's life would be in immediate and eminent danger.
