Trizee
I just read Defending Elysium and since there was no other thread devoted to it, I decided to start one! So... has anyone else noticed the similarity between Jason Write and Orson Scott Card's Jason Worthing? I mean, they're both people who are trying to protect humanity- and not juts physically, but morally too. Not to mention the similarity of their names... It's probably just a coincidence but I thought it was an interesting observation. Edited July 30, 2012 by Trizee
Commander Spoonface he/him
Could a helpful soul dig up places to find more information on this? My searching skills are woefully inadequate and I have, thus far, found nothing. Edited July 30, 2012 by Commander Spoonface
Windrunner he/him
Here is Defending Elysium and just in case you hadn't seen this as well, here's another great sci-fi short story of Brandon's Firstborn.
PeterAhlstrom he/him
I don't know if Brandon read any of the Worthing books. They are among Card's lesser known works. I haven't read them myself, and I've read a lot of Card. Edited July 30, 2012 by PeterAhlstrom
happyman he/him
I'd think that classical references to folks named Jason would be more compelling. The whole thing has a kinda mythic feel to it, even while being sci-fi. (As if the title wasn't hint enough...)
RustnRuin he/him
Didn't know this exsited till a few weeks ago, now just gotta get it signed. It has Defending Elysium in it if you were wondering.
kraefzke
Don't want to start a new thread for this, rather ask in this old one: Has anybody information on if/when Brandon plans to return to this world? I'd certainly like a longer story in this universe, even though i usually prefer fantasy over SF and cosmere over non-cosmere. This was just so great (same goes for Legion, loved that one as well)!
PeterAhlstrom he/him
He has no plans to return to the Defending Elysium world. But there will most likely be more Legion.
happyman he/him
Returning to Defending Elysium would be depressing, in my opinion. Just a bunch of Realpolitik once the veil had been lifted.

It's probably just a coincidence but I thought it was an interesting observation. Here's one more for you - there's a cop named "Orson". I don't really see the similarity between the short story and Worthing myself. Worthing Saga had a very strong focus on Bad Things that's not present in Defending Elysium. But if you want to run with the idea, then I'm not against tossing a little more fuel on your fire.

Returning to Defending Elysium would be depressing, in my opinion. Just a bunch of Realpolitik once the veil had been lifted. Though there isn't much point in discussing since Peter's statement, I strongly disagree: For one thing, there could be great stories set before DE, for another, there could be more about the "lifting of the veil" and for a third, "Realpolitik" doesn't sound bad at all (to me), if written in such a great SF-setting and by such a great author as Brandon. Just to state my pointless point.
Pinpoint he/him
This story was beautifully put together and although I love the tech system I think it was meant to stay short. For some reason making it longer would take away from the wonder of the story.
lyht
I don't know if Brandon read any of the Worthing books. They are among Card's lesser known works. I haven't read them myself, and I've read a lot of Card. Peter, you haven't read the Worthing Saga? You know, I just have to accept that what I have done is not what other people have done. Silly, I know, but surprising to me none the less. The Worthing Saga might have been the third Card book I ever read as a kid, after Wryms (which I didn't like very much) and Ender's Games (which I did, a lot!). Worthing Saga retains a fond place in my heart as one of the nifty stories that got me hooked on Card. Later, as an adult, I found Hot Sleep, and didn't realize it was parts of the same story until I was halfway through the book and was confused by my ability to guess what was going to happen next in the story.
