Random Stuff II

Oh yeah. It came out a while back, in a lecture about how she doesn't want "that stuff" in her house. I don't talk about it, though, and neither do they.

New plan--if she ever brings it up again, point a stick at her and say "Silencio!" loudly and clearly.

I think I once mentioned I had several copies of Aleister Crowley's Satanic Bible in the house. The parents freaked out beyond what I expected and probably wanted to beat me to a bloody pulp when it was revealed that what Mr. Crowley referred to as the "Satanic Bible" was just a normal King James Bible.

Mwahaha!

Some men just want to watch their parents' peace of mind burn.

have fun

(Note: I haven't read the whole thing)

Great Noodly One, I read that. I still can't tell if it's a trollfic or not.

For the sake of entertaining overreaction I am going to assume this was not someone trolling...

My reaction was a burning desire to cut a hole in my office wall, install a very large window and then throw my computer through said window.

I mean religion is all good and dandy, honestly, whatever floats your boat... but really?

I mean, I'm a Christian and I can't stomach that. :mellow::P

Um. um. Um.

Okaaaaaaaay. Run along now Harry dear.

So my mum was iffy about letting my oldest sibling read the books after philosophers stone was given as a birthday present. And then she got hooked, and nicked it to finish while said sibling was at school.

we were banned from reading the Wicca series at one point.

My parents have never cared about magic and stuff.

My dad hates fantasy but doesn't oppose it, my mother is actually currently reading Warbreaker on her business trip right now.

As long as there's no hardcore porn they honesty don't care what I watch/read.

Probably why, despite their "no animist/New Age/magic themes at all ever" rule, the Star Wars movies were allowed alongside The Never-ending Story, The Wizard of Oz and other nostalgia-heavy movies. <_<

There's a certain amount of irony in the fact that a legitimate argument can be made for Glinda being a murderous sociopath who manipulates Dorothy into killing the Wicked Witch of the West.  How is this a legitmate role model for "good" magic?

(Think about it.  She made sure that Dorothy got the ruby slippers, but didn't tell her that they could get her home.  Nope, she sent her on a wild goose chase that inevitably led to a conflict with Westie.)

Not to mention The Never-Ending Story vs. Pixar movies. In the former, when the horse dies, my parents commented on how sad the scene was. Yet the scene with the incinerator in Toy Story 3 prompted outraged cries of "They put this in a kid's movie?" <_<

Just leaving this here.

At least book!Dorothy had a far more believable sense of naiveté, plus it was the near-powerless Good Witch of the North who sent her to Glinda, whose sense of isolationism meant she never would've come to find Dorothy in the first place.

Same. Though I'm not allowed to watch R rated movies.

When I started reading Mistborn, my mom looked over my shoulder, raised an eyebrow at the fact that I was already reading adult fantasy, and said something like, "Eh, Brandon Sanderson is pretty clean. Knock yourself out."

She knows that fiction is fiction and that books like Harry Potter have good messages. (That and Fantasy is her favorite genre after homeschool/parenting manuals)

I'm lucky to have her. :D

There were a lot of movies that wound up on that and similar lists, actually. Mulan was banned at one point because of ancestor worship, Teen Titans because....cartoon violence, I think? They let me watch Static Shock, even if they periodically teased me for liking superhero shows, and TT really isn't any worse....

So yeah. Not sure what their standards were, but I'll give Brother Bear a shot.

What?! Brother Bear isn't my favorite Disney movie, but it's such a great one! Please tell me you've actually seen Mulan too.

I'm mostly the same. It's the Mormon thing. Which is basically how I explained Brandon to them. "He's Mormon and lives here in Utah." So then it was all okay. :P

I can't stop laughing at Flight Rising omg

So they have a "game" thing called Baldwin's Bubbling Brew. Its alchemy, basically, you can drop almost any object in the game into it and it'll give you a base reduction (like goo, slime, etc, in different colors) and you can then take it and make new things for your dragons. Well, at level six or so, you can make lab coats to be ~safe~

Its like "oh yes, apprentices, you can now practice safe alchemy!"

"Oh sweet Baldwin how do we do it?"

"by practicing,,,.. ,, unsafe alchemy,.. ,.,,, "
