eszroth
So I'm writing a report on human emotions and how we influence each other and I wanted to use a quote from Breeze about emotional allomancy where he is defending the morality of it or something. I only have the Audio books which makes it super difficult for me to search through for quotes. If anyone with the book can look through and post quotes about emotional allomancy that you like that would be awesome thanks!
Jondesu he/him
Here's the one that comes to mind for me: Quote âVin looked down at the half-full cup of wine. âYou Pulled on my emotions. WithâŠAllomancy, I mean.â âI Pushed on them, actually,â Breeze said. âPulling makes a person less trusting and more determined. Pushing on emotionsâSoothing themâmakes a person more trusting.â âRegardless, you controlled me,â Vin said. âYou made me fetch you a drink.â âOh, I wouldnât say that I made you do it,â Breeze said. âI just altered your emotions slightly, putting you in a frame of mind where youâd be more likely to do as I wished.â Ham rubbed his chin. âI donât know, Breeze. Itâs an interesting question. By influencing her emotions, did you take away her ability to choose? If, for instance, she were to kill or steal while under your control, would the crime be hers or yours?â Breeze rolled his eyes. âThereâs really no question to it at all. You shouldnât think about such things, Hammondâyouâll hurt your brain. I offered her encouragement, I simply did it through an irregular means.â âButââ âIâm not going to argue it with you, Ham.â The beefy man sighed, looking a little bit forlorn. âAre you going to bring me the drinkâŠ?", Breeze asked hopefully, looking at Vin. âI mean, youâre already up, and youâre going to have to come back this direction to reach your seat anywayâŠ.â Vin examined her emotions. Did she feel irregularly drawn to do as the man asked? Was he manipulating her again? Finally, she simply walked away from the bar, leaving the drink where it was.â EDIT: Actually, this one's better: Quote âWell,â Breeze said, âlet us begin, then. First, you must understand that Soothing is about more than just Allomancy. Itâs about the delicate and noble art of manipulation.â âNoble indeed,â Vin said. âAh, you sound like one of them,â Breeze said. âThem who?â âThem everyone else,â Breeze said. âYou saw how that skaa gentleman treated me? People donât like us, my dear. The idea of someone who can play with their emotions, who can âmysticallyâ get them to do certain things, makes them uncomfortable. What they do not realizeâand what you must realizeâis that manipulating others is something that all people do. In fact, manipulation is at the core of our social interaction.â He settled back, raising his dueling cane and gesturing with it slightly as he spoke. âThink about it. What is a man doing when he seeks the affection of a young lady? Why, he is trying to manipulate her to regard him favorably. What happens when old two friends sit down for a drink? They tell stories, trying to impress each other. Life as a human being is about posturing and influence. This isnât a bad thingâin fact, we depend upon it. These interactions teach us how to respond to others.â He paused, pointing at Vin with the cane. âThe difference between Soothers and regular people is that we are aware of what weâre doing. We also have a slightâŠadvantage. But, is it really that much more âpowerfulâ than having a charismatic personality or a fine set of teeth? I think not.â Vin paused. âBesides,â Breeze added, âas I mentioned, a good Soother must be skilled far beyond his ability to use Allomancy. Allomancy canât let you read minds or even emotionsâin a way, youâre as blind as anyone else. You fire off pulses of emotions, targeted at a single person or in an area, and your subjects will have their emotions alteredâhopefully producing the effect that you wished. However, great Soothers are those who can successfully use their eyes and instincts to know how a person is feeling before they get Soothed.â âWhat does it matter how theyâre feeling?â Vin said, trying to cover her annoyance. âYouâre just going to Soothe them anyway, right? So, when youâre done, theyâll feel how you want them to.â Breeze sighed, shaking his head. âWhat would you say if you knew Iâd Soothed you on three separate occasions during our conversation?â Vin paused. âWhen?â she demanded. âDoes it matter?â Breeze asked. âThis is the lesson you must learn, my dear. If you canât read how someone is feeling, then youâll never have a subtle touch with emotional Allomancy. Push someone too hard, and even the most blind of skaa will realize that theyâre being manipulated somehow. Touch too softly, and you wonât produce a noticeable effectâother, more powerful emotions will still rule your subject.â Breeze shook his head. âItâs all about understanding people,â he continued. âYou have to read how someone is feeling, change that feeling by nudging it in the proper direction, then channel their newfound emotional state to your advantage. That, my dear, is the challenge in what we do! It is difficult, but for those who can do it wellâŠâ Edited November 16, 2016 by Jondesu

Spoolofwhool
There's a passage from the second book from his PoV where he is pushing on emotions. I don't have the book, but IIRC, it's near the end when they're meeting to discuss the approaching koloss. Might be useful as well. If I have a chance later, I'll take a look for it.
