Why hello there!

Hello everyone, I'm Lyerly!  I've been reading Sanderson for about four years now and am thoroughly obsessed!  Now that I've decided to do a second read through of his works, I'm just starting to truly understand the magnitude of the Cosmere and how interconnected all of the books really are!  I'm here to delve into the forums to learn everything I can about this magnificent universe!

Hello! Welcome to the forums! Have an upvote :)

Which of his books have you read? Which are your favorite? I personally like Mistborn and Emperor's Soul the most.

I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have, if you like. Feel free to PM me or quote me in this thread if you want to get my attention.

Also, here you go!

(By the way, don't take the cookies. They're spiked. )

You chose an awesome week to join. ;)

That Cosmere 101 thread is awesome (IIRC there's an updated Cosmere 102...). If there's stuff you're confused about even after reading, you can use the Cosmere Q&A  part of the forums to answer your questions. They're nice. In addition, the Coppermind is an awesome resource, if you're not wary of spoilers. They have a good overview of the cosmere, too.

Have a wonderful stay!

To explain the comments above, this week is the birthday of Peter Ahlstrom, Brandon's assistant. In honor of this occasion, lots of people have changed their names to "Ookla the _____". It's been referred to as Ookla week.

Here's the link to Cosmere 102. I can confirm that both other sources he provided are very useful as well.

Oh, and just to let you know, it's generally preferred if you use the edit function to add information as opposed to posting twice consecutively. It's not a big deal, but it keeps the forums looking nicer ;)

Why, hello there, Lyerly!

I am (usually) known as bleeder. I wear vests, and rant about music.

Welcome to our community. Here on the Shard, you will learn much and get headaches aplenty. Be wary, and armed with aspirin.

Don't eat the cookies. For your own good.

If you ever need anything, feel free to let me know.

Bleeder, you forgot the PDFs :P

If you'd like a copy of Warbreaker or Emperor's Soul, they're both available online for free (and I'm pretty sure they're legal :P). Let me know if you'd like me to get them for you.

I have resigned my duties unless someone brings up that they have not read Warbreaker or Emperor's Soul. But, @Lyerly, if you want to read either, let us know.

@Ookla the Orange @Ookla the Atypical and @Bugsy6912 thank you for the warm welcome and all the helpful links!  Thus far, the Stormlight books are definitely my favorite (after the second read through it surpassed the HP series as my favorite book series - something I thought could never happen!) the world-building in that series just clicked with me and I fell in love!  Thank you for the offer to send me Warbreaker and Emperor's Soul, I already own Warbreaker and I just received my copy of Arcanum Unbounded in the mail yesterday so I have Emperor's Soul now too.  I cannot wait to dive in! :)

Glad to hear and welcome to the Shard. I would have to also agree that the world-building in Stormlight is incredible. As a welcoming gift, I give you some upvotes and a cookie (note: upvotes go best with a cookie, like milk)

I had the same experience with HP! I read all seven 16+ times, and lots of the supplemental material, before finally deciding to pick up the huge, stale-looking book my mom got me for Easter. And now HP pales. I still love it, of course, and they're very good, just like all the Percy Jackson and other random YA book series, but they're just... not Sanderson. He's in a class all his own. :D

Looks like you're covered in cosmere material (especially after getting Arcanum Unbounded.) Have you tried Alcatraz vs the Evil Librarians? Those are lighter, but still hugely entertaining. How about The Rithmatist? I think that should be turned into a touchscreen video game (seriously, it could be really cool.) The biggest non-cosmere work is probably the Reckoners trilogy, starting with Steelheart. If you haven't read those yet, go to your library posthaste. Not even kidding.

You have many hours of happy insanity ahead. Mwhahahaha.

I've actually converted a few new Sanderson fans because they were in shock when I told them HP was no longer my favorite series! :D I have read the Reckoners (I personally consider that series to be "Sanderson 101" and recommend it as the first Sanderson books that my friends who do not have an extensive fantasy background should try - Stormlight might be a little overwhelming at first haha!), but I have not read Alcatraz or the Rithmatist!  I'll have to give them a shot once I finish Arcanum Unbounded. :)

I always recommend Mistborn as a starter.

You must resist the cookies.

Don't eat the cookies, whatever you do!

Also, you actually converted people? Tell me your secrets! :P Seriously, though, I've only gotten 1 friend to read the Cosmere, and another to read Mistborn. This is after over a year of effort. You must be a Rioter or something

PS: Having both started and finished Rithmatist for the first time today, I can second the recommendation.

I recommend Mistborn as a starter for the friends who have a fantasy background!

Fineeee, I'll resist!  And yes I did convert people (11 that I know of for sure, possibly more from my numerous facebook posts about Sandershon haha!)  Over the years I've developed a reputation as "the person with the good book recommendations" so that was enough for a few people to jump in.  The others were either swayed by my saying that HP was no longer my favorite book series or my flat out begging them to read it because I knew they would enjoy the books!  EDIT:  Oh and I recently bought the Mistborn Trilogy as a birthday present for one friend who was being particularly stubborn - so I basically guilted her into reading the books haha!  She is currently working her way through them and loves them!

And that decides it, I'll try the Rithmatist next!
