The thing (which was rather small and very furry) used the opportunity to latch onto Shoe’s arm, from where it scrambled across his shoulders, ran down his other arm, and started nibbling on Shoe’s muffin.

The old man frowned disapprovingly at some muffin crumbs that seemed to be hovering a few inches off the ground. “Sorry about that. They can be rather mischievous. I hope Atkins didn’t frighten you too badly.”

Shoe turned sharply to the old man, glaring daggers.

He pointed to the floating crumbs and spread his palms out in an angry, questioning stance.

“Well, things on the outside of them sometimes don’t turn invisible. The magic is slightly inconsistent, I will admit, but food crumbs usually stay visible, especially when it’s stolen food.”
