“This woman, Ash, was using firemoss. This is likely because I quit giving her alcohol after it made her pass out and slice open her leg.”

Lunamor’s voice softened.

”She really needs help, Kal.”

he just looks around awkwardly

Kaladin half lashed her again, then sat on a stone while she casually lay in the air. What should he do? Take her to the facility? She was going to hurt herself. And Rock said she sliced open her leg…

A few moments later

Kaladin stood outside, listening to Ash’s heavy breathing. He’d put her in a brightly lit, comfortable room for now. He didn’t want to be like the ardents, but he also didn’t trust her around other people yet. She was awake, though.

Ash  sat on the bed in the room, scrunched down into the corner, muttering to herself. She didn't know where she was. Or how she got there. or what she was doing there. her mind felt thick and slow and a headache pounded in her temples. She was dreadfully thirsty and her heart was racing. The monsters. they've come for you!  She tried to squash that voice, telling herself that she was safe.

It didn't work. she gasped as a shadow loomed over her. Ash hid her face in the blanket

Kaladin backed away, holding his hands before him. “Hey,” he said softly. “Ash, right?” She was cringing away from him.

Ash was terrified. She moaned, jerking on her hair.

Kaladin continued to speak in a low voice, his mind on autopilot. Ash wasn't like most of the other people Kaladin had helped before, and he was kind of at a loss. "Ash," he said, louder. "Do you want to come outside? See the light again?"

Kaladin felt helpless as he watched her incomprehension. No, he thought, shaking himself. You can help her. You have to help her. You...you were just like her.

Had he been, though? It was hard to remember those days. They were clouded somehow.

Exhaling softly, Kaladin strode forward and took Ash's arm. "You can't hear me, can you?"
