For a character like a spren or Fused, their entire interpretation of the world is probably based on Shards, as they are literally part of that being. If Honor is the source of the surge of gravitation, an Honorspren probably sees gravity as a product of Honor, for example. In fact, both could be true. It's possible for gravity to be inherent to the Cosmere, for humans. Brandon explicitly confirmed this week that Kelsier can DEFINITELY NOT make an Avatar, and he is completely unable to leave Scadrial in any way. Even characters who know A LOT are still spectacularly wrong about very important things. Don't think of these as "red herrings", think of them as "delicious complications".
